Southland YMCA Education Ltd offers free education to youth and today more than ever youth need qualifications.
Here is an opportunity where groups are small with a hands-on learning environment. YMCA Education is NZQA accredited and offers courses to those who have low or no qualifications. We also have available literacy and numeracy tutors along with individual support. We work with each student where they gain individual life and work experience.

  • If you are aged between 16 and 18 years
AND
one of the following conditions:
  • You have no or low qualifications
OR
  • You are registered with Work and Income as a Youth Client
then you may be eligible to attend the following Youth Courses:

Smooth Running Course
DRIVING AND EMPLOYMENT SKILLS
Would you like your drivers licence?
Gain your learners and/or restricted licence and at the same time learn about managing your money, personal presentation, interviews, CV's, health and safety in the workplace, just to name a few.

Training Opportunities - 18 years and over (Eligibility Applies)

  • If you are aged 18 years or over

then you may be eligible to attend the following Engineering Course:

Learning to weld will open new work opportunities.

Conservation Corps

ELIGIBILITY
  • If you are aged 16 to 25
AND
  • genuinely interested in conservation, the environment and the outdoors
then you are eligible and should enjoy the following course:
CONSERVATION CORPS - FREE COURSE
Are you prepared to accept a challenge?
This course is for young men and women who are prepared to enjoy outdoor recreation and work experience, and who accept a challenge. It is designed for young people with no previous experience or qualifications.

Conservation_Corps

Street Talk - 15, or over (Eligibility Applies)

ELIGIBILITY
  • If you are 15 years or older
AND
  • You have held a restricted drivers licence for at least 5 months
then you may be eligible to attend the following Course:
STREET TALK - $120 NZ
Want to adjust the "thinking" of driving?
Street Talk is designed to identify and challenge attitudes and behaviours that lead to dangerous or reckless driving.
  • Completion of this course can reduce your restricted licence period by 6 months (3 months if you are older than 25).
Please note: This course is not free, but costs $120 NZ. It consists of 4 theory sessions of 2 hours each, then 1 practical session. For more information you can contact Diane Charlton.

Specialist Youth Service Corps (Eligibility Applies)

ELIGIBILITY
  • If you are 15 to 17 years old (in some cases 14)
AND
  • You have been referred from a Youth Justice Family Group Conference or Youth Court
then you may be eligible to attend the following Course:
SPECIALIST YOUTH SERVICE CORPS - FREE COURSE
Aim: To prevent or reduce the risk of teenagers re-offending
This program is targeted at 15-17 year olds and those 14 year olds who meet special conditions.

It is a 20 week program, where 30% is allocated to recreation, 40% to community service activities, and 30% to education/life skills development/behavioural issues - including:
  • anger management
  • violence prevention
  • awareness of alcohol and drug use
  • communication skills
  • individual and family support and
  • work experience
